When we have just arrived in Steamboat and need to feed the family and friends, we call or drop by the Drunken Onion. They have great preprepared meals. You can also buy more Steamboat Springs Coffee & Tea Company coffee. 685 Marketplace Plaza #5 (next to the movie theatre) 970-879-8423 http://www.drunkenonion.com
Slopeside Grill
This is the best apres ski restaurant and bar on the mountain. Great bar atmosphere and great food that you can literally ski in / ski out. Located down at the bottom of the Right-O-Way run. From the gondola base look up and left. On warm days, sit outside and watch your kids ski by. At night it is the place to be for adults with a band and a great bar atmosphere. 1855 Ski Time Square http://slopesidegrill.com
Bear River Bar & Grill
This is the most convenient apres ski BAR on the mountain. Directly across from the gondola. This huge outside decked bar is where you will wait for your group to gather at the end of each day. A perfect view of the Lil Rodeo Terrain Park and Halfpipe or a view of the ski school and bunny slopes. They have a grill and inside seating, but the tent outside usually has live music playing in front of the Billy Kid statue. You have to ask someone to take your picture in front of his statue. Locate in the heart of Gondola Square. bear-river-bar-grill
Mountain Brew
Local friendly coffee house with great cakes, breads, muffins, quiche and breakfast sandwiches. A charming little old house on Oak Street with wifi and a free newspaper. DO NOT go to Starbucks while you are in Steamboat. You will love Mountain Brew. 427 Oak Street. (downtown) http://www.mountainbrewsteamboat.com
Laundry
Dinner - This is a neat place to go for a nice adult evening. The kids will not appreciate it. The building is the old Steamboat Laundry. The food is fun and interesting with homemade cheeses and locally cured meats. I've been three times. The bar is great and the bartenders will really take care of you with special drinks. Call ahead, it is a popular place. 127 11th St. (Next door to Creekside Cafe) www.thelaundryrestaurant.com
Aurum
Lunch & Dinner - Okay, this has one of the best locations on Yampa Street and may become one of our new favorites for “a little nicer” SS restaurant. We much prefer it over CV Bistro or Low Country. New ownership and new name (Use to be Sweetwater), but don’t hold that against them. Everything is new and improved. This is a great venue for an event. With a lower deck with bands and an upper deck patio overlooking the river and perfect for a reception or event. This is a neat place to go for happy hour too. 811 Yampa Street www.aurmsteamboat.com
Harwigs
Dinner - Local adult favorite. Elegant atmosphere and menu. Best bartender in town and nice happy hour if your a wine drinker. We also discovered that this would be a great event venue with a couple of private dining options. This might match Cafe Diva. Located downtown. 911 Lincoln Ave www.harwigs.com
Creekside Cafe & Grill
Breakfast & Lunch - great atmosphere with outdoor seating next to a creek. Breakfast is great with homemade breads. The hamburgers look great and are huge. This is the most popular weekend brunch time place. Call for a reservation if you can plan that far ahead. Sit outside if the weather allows. 131 11th St. (1 block off Lincoln) www.creekside-cafe.com
Freshies
Breakfast & Lunch - Great food and a typical Steamboat friendly local atmosphere. This is our favorite for breakfast. The food is great and you won’t have to wait as long as Creekside or Wynona’s. We love it. Great everything with healthy choices, if your into that thing! Lunch is great too. 595 South Lincoln Ave. (between Downtown and Mtn www.freshiessteamboat.com
Wynona's
Breakfast - Lunch and Dinner What can I say, another great local friendly place. Get there early, it is small and people will wait. GIANT Cinnamon Rolls. They have some unique breakfast items and sandwiches are great too. Maybe there is a reason people wait for Wynona’s. 617 Lincoln Ave. (Downtown) www.winonassteamboat.com
Fiesta Jalisco (midmountain)
or
Vaqueros (downtown)
Lunch and Dinner This is best Mexican food in town. Located a block up the street from Starbucks midway between the mountain and downtown. Their sister restaurant is Vaqueros located downtown on Lincoln and seems to be the same food. 445 Anglers Drive http://www.fiestajalisco.net/steamboat.htm
Steamboat Smokehouse BBQ
Lunch and Dinner Very good BBQ and great chopped beef sliders. I am told that the owners have mixed the BBQ of TX, NC, TN influences. You get to choose between savory or vinegar sauce (that makes sense if you truly like BBQ). It is right downtown with the big pink pig out front. 912 Lincoln Ave. http://steamboatsmokehouse.com
Back Country Province
Great deli sandwiches. Delicious fresh bread. I loved the sandwich called “The Grand”. 635 South Lincoln Ave. (Downtown 2nd level of retail center) http://backcountryprovisions.com/steamboat.php
Mambo Italiano
Great for dinner. My favorite Italian. Outdoor bar and seating in Summer and Fall. They have live music some nights. Good brick oven pizza and all other italian dishes as well. Wine list. Friendly customer service and a great atmosphere. 521 Lincoln Ave. http://mambos.com
Mahogany Ridge Brewery & Grill
Great happy hours and eclectic menu. Great happy hour with unique tapas. They offer many unique brews. I recommend the brew sampler to help you try some new beers and decide what you like. The food is great and the atmosphere is worth the visit. Sit at the bar and talk to the locals. 435 Lincoln Ave. http://www.mahoganyridgesteamboat.com
Sake2U
One of the best locations on the river (use to be The Boathouse). The Sake2me on the mountain has moved with good sushi just like you get in the larger cities. The bar and restaurant hasn't changed much so it is a great place to meet and socialize and has more than just sushi. Still the same great place to have a drink and a perfect place to watch the river. 609 Yampa www.sake2u.com
Scratch
Located on Yampa next door to Carl’s and is actually a great alternative to Carl’s or E3 located directly across the street. Same view and great location, very good food, but a less formal and without the high energy bar. Perfect for families and the service and food is great. 700 Yampa www.scratcheatery.com
Carl's Tavern
It is the most big city bar in town, but has a new owner and menu. It has a sports bar/restaurants feel and it is great. I nice menu and huge bar. An exciting atmosphere and a great menu. Well behaved dogs tied to every tree on the sidewalk. You will love it. This is where people meet after most of the city events. In the summer, the Farmer's Market is right outside of Carl's. 700 Yampa (7th & Yampa) www/carlstavern.com/menu
Brick
You have to see this pizza oven. This a new restaurant located just across from the Trailhead Lodge which has the small gondola that takes you from mid-mountain up to the resort. The pizza is authentic Italian, and the environment is great. The chef walks around to ensure you are happy and the main entrees are outstanding. The short-rib (roast beef) was incredible and can easily be shared. If don’t want to fight the downtown parking or heavy tourist traffic, Brick is a great alternative. I wouldn’t take a baseball team, but they can accommodate a large group. 1195 Bangtail Way http://www.bricksteamboat.com
Cafe` Diva
One of the few posh, adult restaurants considered Steamboat's finest dine. You can still dress mountain casual, but it is excellent and well worth trying. It is pricy, but service and quality is worth it. I would highly recommend this if your celebrating or want to have a quiet adult evening without going downtown. It is located close to the base and you could easily walk. 1855 Ski Time Square http://cafediva.com
E3 Chophouse
Location, location location. Sits right on the Yampa. Eat outside if you can. You cannot beat the river view. Nice steakhouse with a comfortable atmosphere. Sunday night has a special. It sits just across from Carl's. 701 Yampa http://www.e3chophouse.com
Cantina
Casual and very average Mexican food, but specifically a great specials on Taco Tuesday. Good local bar right downtown. 818 Lincoln Ave http://www.steamboatcantina.com
The Butcherknife Brewery
This is a great local brewery and not a restaurant. You can sample the beers in 2oz, 5oz or a pint. The view of the mountains is great and everyone brings their dog. If your tired of eating and just want to sit in the open air and drink a beer with your and everyone else dog, this is the place. Just a couple block up Elk River Rd off Lincoln. Turn right at the light on “The Curve”. 2875 Elk River Road butcherknifebrewing.com
The Backdoor Grill
This is a great casual old fashion burger place. You can watch the games downstairs or upstairs of this old house. They have a nice porch for outdoor seating that opens on to Oak St. My favorite burger in town and great onion rings and fries. It’s an old house with many locals. That tells you something. 825 Oak Street thebackdoorgrill.com
Cugino’s Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant
Okay, this a first for me. Cugino’s has new ownership. I had a lunch meeting and the owner was such a nice guy and the food and service were so good, I am putting them back on my recommendation list. It is a great location and they have added a nice outdoor eating for warm weather. Years ago, Cugino’s was the best family pizzeria in town located in the old house on Oak (now The Backdoor Grill). After experiencing the worst service, longest wait for food and an embedded tip (they said infant made 6), I swore “never again”. Well the new owner is doing a great job and I predict will bring Cugino’s back to greatness. Good place to take the family. I’m giving them a 2nd chance and my recommendation. 41 8th Street (corner of 8th & Yampa) Cugino’s
Low Country Kichen
This does not make our favorites list, but many people like it. Too many better options. 435 Lincoln Avenue lowrestaurant.com
O-Neil’s Tavern & Grill
A great downtown Irish bar atmosphere located below the street level. The food is good with the same owner as The Backdoor Grill which is a good thing. 737 Lincoln Avenue oneilstavernandgrill.com
